Brooklyn Triathlon Club welcomes members of all backgrounds—from beginners to elites, sprint to Ironman—who are interested in learning, training and racing. We support our members with group workouts, social events and educational clinics and workshops. Founded in 2004, the Brooklyn Tri Club has become one of the largest clubs in the city. BTC’s mission is to foster the sport of triathlon in Brooklyn and the greater New York area.

BTC is following state and local restrictions regarding Covid-19. All group workouts and in-person clinics are ‘on pause’ until further notice.  Our coaches have provided a new virtual workout blog, where both members and non-members can follow along our weekly workouts. Please continue your best social distancing practices and we hope to be training with you all soon!

#triathletethursday!! Meet Michael! Michael joine #triathletethursday!! Meet Michael! Michael joined BTC about 12 years ago. Michael is a proud union public defender, which is a labor of love. He plays guitar in a band (www.longgonewest.com) based in Gowanus. He is extremely grateful to the BTC board and members who devote their time and talent to making this club so incredibly active, fun, fast, and supportive. (Thanks Michael! :) )

What led you to join BTC?
Wanting to train with all the people who were flying past me in Prospect Park.

What are your race goals this year?
Making it to the start line for anything (been dealing with a back injury since November).

How can BTC help you meet those goals?
I really need to find a way to get out of work to attend Ben's strength sessions this year.

What is your favorite race distance?
140.6, although I've only done one. It was like a all-day rave with extremely fit and naturally positive people. The training time commitment is too much for my lifestyle, though.

What's your favorite piece of gear you own?
My old Strong Like Bull long-sleeved cycling kit, which brings back fond memories of sick two-wheeled adventures with dear friends.

What is your most embarrassing moment or "biggest triathlon fail"?
Racing the Westchester Olympic Tri, in a wetsuit borrowed from someone 20lbs lighter than me, for my 1st OWS and mass start ever. Someone swam right into my ribs and when I lifted my head, I realized I had been swimming across the entire field! The bike and run were a celebration of not drowning. Kids: swimming well will rarely win a tri, but swimming poorly can easily ruin one, so get in the water often.

What is your favorite pre-race meal the night before a race?
White rice with veggie stock.

Thanks for sharing with us, Michael!
#triathletethursday! Meet Alexa! This is Alexa's s #triathletethursday! Meet Alexa! This is Alexa's second year as a BTCer. When she's not triathlon-ing, Alexa always comes back to yoga. She adores Lyons Den Power Vinyasa Yoga, and especially during this trying time we are all living through currently, she does so many of their live classes which keep her centered and coming back to herself. Alexa believes yoga to be the cornerstone of all mental and physical health and that it is necessary to keep from injuring ourselves. She also spends countless hours with her boys going on walks and exploring caterpillars or whatever they come across each day. "Thank you BTC crew, for all that you do, and here's to a safe season and looking forward to all being together in person again eventually!"

What led you to join BTC?
I had seen the BTC team in Prospect Park for years during my morning rides in the park, and it always looked like such fun, I dreamt of joining since becoming a cyclist.

What are your race goals this year?
I had signed up for the Popular Brooklyn Half and also a few smaller races, then was planning on signing up for Jersey Girl in August. As a young breast cancer survivor, I had to have a second reconstruction last year which slowed down my race goals for the time being, so after completing my first triathlon at the Josh Billings in the Berkshires with a kayak (instead of swim), then the Mighty Montauk a year later, I wanted to take my time to properly train for more triathlons later this summer.

How can BTC help you meet those goals?
The group workouts are stellar to motivate, and the community is amazing to keep us all hanging in there and showing up, doing the work, and looking forward to coffee afterward together. I look SO forward, as we all do, to when we are able to meet up again for these workouts and coffees as a reward together. For now, the coaches and team are doing an incredible job at keeping everyone together virtually through the online meets and workouts. As a mom of two very young boys, I don't often make the online meets these days, but look forward to when I can!

Their Swimmer Scholar program emphasizes individual and team growth, a thorough knowledge of swimming, the spirit of sportsmanship, a healthy lifestyle, and academic excellence in underserved communities. The Trident Swim Foundation programs serve hundreds of kids each year. In addition to their Manhattan locations, they also have a local Prospect Heights Team. While their pools were closed, they offered zoom sessions and dryland clinics to keep their athletes motivated. They are currently gearing up for their fall programs in hope that schools will be open.
Please donate directly on their website and fill in BTC as the organization if you’d like. http://www.tridentswimfoundation.org/donate.html
